Random Musing of the Day

You know, the reason I like Science Fiction, oh by the way, I like science fiction! HA!  The reason though is because science fiction tends to be so alien, so out of the ordinary that it's hard for the general public to relate to a movie, tv series, etc, that's so far out there.  To allow people to relate to something so "alien" there is a deeper human component thrown into many science fictions shows and movies.  One of an emotional nature to draw people into the human element and be able to relate to the situations even if they are a bit alien.

What I find intriguing about this though, is that I thought this meant emotion was the key to being human. After all, without emotion, we would be emotionless robots, making decisions without regard -- without empathy or care for others.  There's emotional elements to both Physical pain and emotional pain, so, it stands to reason that without emotion we would most likely even put people in danger without empathy for how many or who would be hurt.  It is in this way that humans would caese to function without human emotion.

However, does emotion make us human? Set aside from the animals.  Intellect, certainly (for many of us anyways.) However, I heard something this past week that threw me for a philosophical loop... The flaws of each person, make us human. To err, is human.

In a way Character flaws are to be celebrated, because they make us the people we are. It's important to understand this as a writer, for understanding what makes people human, going back to science fiction, will help the story be more relatable to the reader, and the more relatable to the reader the story, given an interesting plot and good story telling, the more the reader might come away learning something and really relating to the story and therefore like it all the more..

I didn't focus on this in the past, because some flaws become self evident, but, I didn't think of flaws as meaning one is human.  To this wolf it was an important discovery.
